The Early History of Cleveland
by Charles Whittlesey
1867
includes original papers and other matter relating to the adjacent country with biographical notices of the pioneers and surveyors
TABLE OF CONTENTS

The Early History of Cleveland, published in 1867, includes journal entries from the early survey parties that surveyed the Western Reserve. Also included is geological information and a history of the Native Americans in the area. This book is considered a landmark, because it was the first book length history of Cleveland.

The author, Charles Whittlesey, was a geologist by trade, but had many different interests. He also practiced law, was interested in archeology and history as well. He helped to found the Western Reserve Historical Society, and served as their president for a time. He was chosen to serve on the first geologic survey of Ohio, and also aided surveys for ore in both Michigan and Wisconsin.
