The Marquis de Lafayette Collection web site was created at Cleveland State University Library with the assistance of the Maison Française de Cleveland. The purpose of the site is to offer student, faculty, scholars, and enthusiasts on both sides of the Atlantic a glimpse of the life and times of the Marquis de Lafayette by making available representative documents from the Marquis de Lafayette Collection, an assemblage of documents microfilmed at the Château Lagrange, ancestral home of Lafayette.
The library is digitizing selected documents from the collection in keeping with its mission to preserve and share collections online. We envision the creation of bilingual versions of the difficult to read eighteenth-century manuscripts with pictures of the original hand-written pages followed by typed transcriptions and translations. Related artifacts such as seals, commemorative plates, and historic signatures are also showcased to help bring these historical documents alive. Cleveland State is grateful to its partners:
