Beatnik Leader Wants Marijuana Legalized in U.S.

In appearance, bearded Daryll Allen Levy, 22, is the archetype of a beatnik.
A slightly built poet and woodcarver, he is readily identifiable with his black, uncombed hair, hooded sweat-shirt, Levis and heavy boots.
Levy, whose friends call him D. A., is an important figure in the beatnik community of University Circle. His is an unofficial position of leadership.
But unlike so many beats, Levy is no phony. He seemed sincere in talks with his reporter.
LEVY WAS ONE of a number of students and nonstudents interviewed by this reporter over three months. Purpose of the investigation was to discover the extent of the use of marijuana, hallucinatory drugs and pep pills in the University Circle area.
Levy’s views obviously represent a minority opinion so far as marijuana is concerned. However, it is a point of view that is being given space so readers can be exposed to a variety of views on the subject.
An active poet, Levy is one of the young rebels who does not attend college but lives near University Circle.
THE OUTSPOKEN D. A. has radical opinions on a variety of subjects. His views on the possession and use of marijuana are no exception.
"I would like to see marijuana legalized," said Levy, in a statement designed to shock.
