Mastroianni Music Reviews
Eddy Arnold show refreshes the soul
I'll admit right from the beginning that country music isn't my cup of moonshine...July 18, 1972
Fans rally 'round Jerry Vale
Singer Jerry Vale made his fourth visit to Musicarnival beginning last
night, proving nor only his durability but also an increase in
popularity. An additional performance has already been added to the
week-long run at 4 p.m. Sunday...July 25 1972
Martino sings several styles
Yes, children, there was an Al Martino before there was a "Godfather.'
The singer's role in tlhat popular movie has brought him new prominence
but the Al Martino who opened a week's stand at Musicarnival last night
is the product of more than two decades of singing. The result is a
polished and easy-going style that doesn't come about overnight...August 15, 1972
Longer "Hair" set here Curiosity not only kills cats, It sells tickets to "Hair." The five-week run of the controversial rock musical at the Hanna has
been extended another three weeks, through Sunday, May 2. Tickets will go on sale next week, not now.
Beatles? Yeah, yeah, yeah! The Beatles are gone but the myth lives on. Their music is everywhere but the nearest you will get to the myth, to a very small taste of the very large excitement that pervaded an era of entertainment, is visiting
"Beatlemania," a show that opened at the Palace last night.
Sammy Davis Jr. a hit in hotpants and songs Sammy Davis Jr. opened last night at Musicarnival in black hotpants,
stockings (panty hose?), gray boots with patent leather toes, and
flowing yellow shirt with billowing sleeves, ruffled collar and open
front.
“Godspell” puts Bible to rock "The Godspell"—it isn't Shakespeare, it isn't Shaw, it isn't even
classical. It is a rock musical drawing on the New Testament for its
material. But it is on the schedule of the Great Lakes Shakespeare
Festival.
Porter tunes at Palace are easy to love The show is zippy, effervescent, campy, novel and it bears the
gosh-awful title of 'Ben Bagley's Decline and Fall of the Entire World as seen Through the Eyes of Cole Porter." It opened at the 51-year~old
Palace Theater last night and it just could keep that theater aglow through the holidays and beyond.
'Waltz' Is Merry in KenIey Version Richard Rodgers' musical "Do I Hear A Waltz?" is being performed in Warren by the Kenley Players in a brash and noisy manner that pleases the audience even though it is not in keeping with the rueful quality of
the story nor the quiet, rather ordinary music by the composer.
Mellow Sinatra Charms His Fans The King—Francis Albert Sinatra—Mr. Entertainment himself came to town last night and there wasn’t an empty seat in Public Hall. The audience of 9,925 was mostly fortyish, plump and gray, but their idol is lot less lean than he used to be.
"Kenley Helps "Funny Girl' by Adding Song, 'My Man' For those who wondered—and there were many — how an honest-to-gosh Fanny Brice song would sound in "Funny Girl," the musical pseudo-biography of the Ziegfield star, the answer is that it sounds good enough to make the rest of the Jule Styne score pretty pallid.
Beatles Show Is a Musical Fiasco Theological misgivings not withstanding, the Beatles played Cleveland in the Stadium last night. It was quite scrimmage. It was a replay of the Beatles' Public Hall engagement of 1964 when hysterical
fans stormed the stage. This time the crowd was bigger, the terrain different
but the action was the same.
Nero and His Piano give Fans an Earful Peter Nero was the featured artist at last night's pop concert in Public Hall.
Capsule judgment: One of the more satisfying pops with Nero giving his fans
what they paid to hear.
“110 in the Shade,” but Very Pleasant "110 in the Shade" opened last night in Karamu Proscenium Theater. In the cast
are Providence HolIander, Bill Bourguin, William Engel, Harry Caldwell, Sonny
Thompson and Sharon Lee. Capsule comment: Good play, fair music, pleasant evening.
Cast Is Superb in “My Fair Lady” "My Fair Lady" opened last night at Musicarnival. In the cast are Ronald
Drake, Naomi Collier, Leonard Elliott, Lloyd Battista, Harry Theyard and
Cynthia Latham. Capsule judgment: This first~class musical brings out the best
in everybody.
Orchestra, Chorus Share Honors The Cleveland Orchestra, Chorus and soloists under Robert Shaw performed
Honegger's "King David" Symphonic Psalm at Severance Hall last night.
Assistant concert master Daniel Majeske was soloist in two works for violin
and small orchestra Capsule judgment: Magnificent. Oratorio music for people
who don't like oratorios.
Questions Hall Ban on Beatle - Like Groups Mayor Locher's musical tastes may be excellent but his wisdom in banning the Beatles and similar groups from Public Hall is less than perfect. Aside from the danger of arbitrary censorship, inherent in any such act by a public official, is the bizarre possibility of a fight developing over free
speech in artistic expression in a matter in which the expression isn't very artistic.
"Wildcat" Gushes Fun at Big Tent "Wildcat" opened at Musicarnival last night. Among those in the cast are Mark
Dawson, Norma Doggett, Maryann Hillyer, Bill Galarno and Robert Miragliotta.
Capsule judgment: Weak play, fair music, pleasant show.
