Atlas of Cuyahoga County, Ohio from actual surveys by and under the directions of D. J. Lake, C. E Originally published by Titus, Simmons & Titus, Philadelphia 1874 TABLE OF CONTENTS This Atlas, published in Philadelphia by D.J. Lake and the firm of Titus, Simmons & Titus, was one of two such commercial atlases of Cleveland to appear in 1874, the first such local examples of this important genre. Highly detailed and fairly common, it has become a staple for local history and genealogical research into nineteenth century Cuyahoga County and has seen one facsimile reprinting in 1975. |

The Cuyahoga Historic Atlas Project (CHAP), a collaboration of several local institutions, was formed in 2001 to explore the feasibility of digitizing all the early commercial atlases of greater Cleveland and elected to experiment with the 1874 Lake/Titus atlas. The Cleveland State University Library contracted to digitize the maps and illustrations and then reformatted them as Lizardtech's Djvu files and mounted them to the web. The illustrations of private and public buildings were added to the library's CONTENTdm image database and all are freely available through this web site. CHAP plans to seek funding for digital versions of the other early Cleveland atlases. | |
